Audi R15 TDI is silverstone-bound for british race debut

The Le Mans-conquering Audi R15 TDI sports prototype is bound for Silverstone, where on Sunday September 12th it will again be caught up in yet more enthralling skirmishes in the battle for the new Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

The ultimate Audi race car, known internally as the R15 TDI 'plus', is based on the original 2009 R15 TDI, but features extensive modifications to aerodynamics and to the potent V10 diesel engine made last winter to comply with new regulations. The pedigree of these thoroughbreds includes the celebrated R8, described by Autosport magazine recently as 'the best ever sports prototype', and the V12 TDI-powered Audi R10 TDI that made history in 2006 by becoming the first sportscar to win the Le Mans 24-hour marathon under diesel power.

In its revised form, enhanced by newly developed turbo chargers with variable turbine geometry (VTG), the latest 5.5-litre, ten cylinder diesel unit powered the Audi R15 TDI into the top-three places in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours, the brand's ninth victory in arguably the world's toughest motor race.

In the process, the winning R15 TDI racked up a total of 397 laps, or 3,361 miles, at an average speed of 139.95mph, setting new race distance and race average speed records in the process. Over the 24-hour period it was at idle in the pits for just 20 minutes, bearing testament to the impressive reliability and fuel efficiency that characterises all competition and road-going Audi TDI models, the latter accounting for 71% of the 91,172 UK Audi sales posted in 2009.

Silverstone beckons

On the second Sunday in September the mettle of the R15 TDI will again be tested to extremes at Silverstone when two examples entered by Audi Sport Team Joest face formidable challenges from Peugeot and Aston Martin. At the wheel of the two Audi entries will be the familiar faces of Timo Bernhard, Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Scotland's Allan McNish.

The Silverstone race is not only the fifth and final round of the Le Mans Series but also the opening race for the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup which moves on to North America for the 1,000-mile Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta, and then to Zhuhai in China for another six-hour marathon. From 2011, the ILMC series will become even more intense with a planned roster of seven endurance races in America, Asia and Europe.

The Silverstone action gets under way with qualifying at 1.40pm on Saturday September 11th, with the 170-lap race, staged on the new Grand Prix circuit, scheduled to start at 11.55am on Sunday the 12th.

Knockout punch in a velvet glove comes courtesy of a formidable new 313PS Audi Biturbo TDI engine, which is now available for A6 Saloon and Avant and A7 Sportback models. The new twin-turbo V6 is notable not only for being the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine ever offered by the Vorsprung durch Technik brand, but also the sweetest-sounding. Available now in A6 models priced from £43,810 OTR, and from £51,645 OTR in the A7 Sportback, it combines trademark Audi TDI refinement with an exhaust-mounted sound actuator that enables it to deliver its mighty 650Nm output to the tune of a distinctly sporting soundtrack. 

Slotting in above the single-turbo 204PS and 245PS versions of the 3.0 TDI that already feature in the A6 and A7 Sportback ranges, the latest V6 has a two-stage turbocharger group that delivers a maximum boost pressure of up to 3.2 bar, helping the A6 3.0 BiTDI quattro Saloon to lunge at the horizon and pass the 62mph marker in as little as 5.1 seconds, and the A6 Avant and A7 Sportback to do the same in just 5.3 seconds. An electronically limited top speed of 155mph is common to all versions.

Like the existing TDI engines, the new star performer is backed up by technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform, including start-stop and recuperation systems and the innovative thermal management system that quickly brings the coolant and oil up to their operating temperatures. With their help, combined economy in A6 and A7 Sportback models is on an equal footing at 44.1mpg – an impressive figure given the high outputs and low acceleration times involved.

Sound actuator

Thanks to an innovative actuator in the auxiliary channel of the exhaust system, the BiTDI A6 and A7 Sportback models don’t sound like they should be capable of such level-headed economy figures. The actuator system essentially consists of a speaker which imposes a defined oscillation pattern on the exhaust flow and transforms the typical TDI exhaust note into a more sonorous roar that is closer to the output of a high-performance petrol engine.

Without exception, power is transmitted from the BiTDI engine via an eight-speed tiptronic transmission to the latest generation quattro all-wheel-drive system, which features a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring for optimum traction and stability. A sport differential which distributes power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels is available from the options list to sharpen and quicken response even further.

The mighty new BiTDI engine is available in conjunction with SE and S line specification in the A6 Saloon, A6 Avant and A7 Sportback. The forthcoming A6 allroad quattro, due to open for order in February, will also offer this exceptional unit.

Stand-out features common to all these models include satellite navigation linked to a 6.5-inch retractable colour monitor, Milano leather upholstery, the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system controlling throttle response, transmission shift points and steering feel, the Audi parking system plus, light and rain sensors, cruise control and keyless go push-button engine ignition.

All-new Audi RS 4 Avant takes practicality to even greater extremes

V8-powered Audi high performance Avant is readied for first UK deliveries this autumn

The price of epically rapid progress in the all-new, third generation Audi RS 4 Avant has been confirmed this week at £54,925 OTR, and first deliveries of this paradox of practicality and extremity will begin in the autumn.

The Audi RS 4 Avant features a high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 engine that delivers 450 PS at 8,250 rpm and maximum torque of 430 Nm between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. It powers the super-Avant with standard seven-speed S tronic transmission from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 155 mph, which can be increased to 174 mph if required. No less impressively, it achieves all this while at the same time potentially returning up to 26.4mpg according to the combined cycle test.

In common with every Audi RS model, the RS 4 Avant features quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which is bolstered here by the advanced crown-gear centre differential and the sports rear differential for exceptionally smooth torque transfer between the front and rear axles and the left and right rear wheels. A 40:60 split operates in normal conditions, but up to 70 per cent of power can be channeled to the front and as much as 85 per cent to the rear if the conditions necessitate this.

A torque vectoring system, which acts on all four wheels, works with the self-locking crown gear differential to further enhance power management, and the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) also offers a Sport mode or can be fully deactivated for circuit use.

The lowered chassis of the Audi RS 4 Avant, which features a five-link set-up at the front and a self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear assembly, is complemented by highly efficient new speed-dependent electromechanical power steering with a direct steering ratio for highly precise road feel. It helps the driver stay on course by making slight steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip.

High performance wave brake discs

Polished 19-inch, ten-spoke forged aluminium wheels shod with 265/35-series tyres amply fill the arches, particularly as the taut RS set-up positions the body 20 millimetres lower than a standard A4 Avant. Behind these are large, internally-ventilated wave brake discs with eight-piston callipers which ensure unshakeable stopping power. They also feature revised friction rings which help to reduce weight by three kilograms, improving the balance of unsprung masses in the process.

For especially committed drivers carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs are also available at extra cost, as is the Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) system, which uses diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers linked by hydraulic lines and a central valve. During fast cornering, the system intensifies the stabilisation of the front outside wheel for optimum stability and composure. Its response can be varied across three settings at the touch of a button.

When DRC is fitted it can be fine-tuned by the driver via the standard Audi drive select driving dynamics system, which offers selectable comfort, auto, dynamic and individual modes accessed by the MMI control unit.

The drive select system is also responsible for the operating characteristics of the sports differential, the weighting of the steering, the shift pattern of the S tronic transmission and the response of the throttle, all of which can also be set according to the four parameters. The sound of the exhaust system is also altered when downshifting in dynamic mode.

If the optional dynamic steering system is fitted, this is also controllable via Audi drive select. The dynamic steering system can alter the actual ratio of the steering by nearly 100 per cent depending on speed and automatically counter-steers slightly at the cornering limit for even more precise and stable handling.

New optional Sport Package

The Dynamic Ride Control and dynamic steering options are available individually or combined as part of a new Sport Package, which also includes larger 20-inch rotor design aluminium or titanium-look alloy wheels to replace the standard 19-inch examples and a sports exhaust system that further amplifies the V8’s distinctive engine note. Priced at £2,250, it offers a saving of £2,915 compared with specifying the options individually.

The interior of the RS 4 Avant is finished completely in black, with the exception of the roof lining, which is optionally available in Moon Silver. Chrome clasps subtly accentuate switches and control elements. Carbon inlays are standard, with brushed matte aluminium, Aluminium Race, piano black finish or a light stainless steel mesh available as options.

The standard front Super sports seats with integrated headrests are power- adjustable and covered in a combination of black leather and Alcantara. High-grade full leather packages, and an Audi exclusive design package incorporating RS bucket seats with even more pronounced contours and honeycomb quilting, are also available as options.

Standard equipment highlights also include DVD-based satellite navigation, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, cruise control and Audi Music Interface iPod connection.

From the options list a broad range of state-of-the-art driver assistance and communication systems can be specified, and a number of these have been combined in the highly cost effective Technology Package Advanced, priced at £1,420. The package includes an upgrade from DVD navigation to the hard disk-based HDD navigation system with ‘jukebox’, adaptive cruise control, the parking system advanced with reversing camera and the active lane assist lane departure warning system.

When this package (or the individual HDD navigation option) is specified, it is also possible to include Mobile Phone Preparation – High with Audi connect, which not only brings Google Earth mapping, Google Street View and the Audi online traffic information service to the car but also allows occupants to connect their own portable devices to the internet.

Options for the luggage compartment, which offers up to 1,430 litres of cargo space, include a rail system with load securing set and a power-operated tailgate.

Audi revolutionises ‘handling’ in the snow with its Carbon Ski concept

Decades of Audi expertise gained in developing quattro models that resolutely hold the road even on snow and ice have just been invested in two skis rather than four wheels for the first time. The new Audi Carbon Skis benefit from the brand’s very latest lightweight construction know-how, and its famously obsessive design and development process, ensuring that they bring time-honoured Vorsprung durch Technik innovation to the black run. The new high-tech skis are currently being developed for ‘series production’, and may become available as early as this coming winter (2011/2012).

The experts from Audi Concept Design have kept the structure of the skis simple – an outer shell of high-strength carbon fibre encloses layers of aluminium and titanium, and a wood core. At 1,550g (for a 170cm ski), each ski will be around 200g lighter than comparable models, which makes them incredibly manoeuvrable and agile.

“Carbon and aluminium are central elements in Audi design – these exclusive materials underscore the outstanding quality of our cars,” Wolfgang Egger, Head of Design for the Audi Group said. “The design of the ski also intentionally dispenses with unnecessary lines and concentrates fully on the material.”

The advantage of lightweight carbon fibre is that it gives outstanding strength, good damping properties and stiffness, while minimizing torsion and revolutionising the handling properties of the ski. The ski flexes on the mogul slopes to achieve optimal grip on uneven surfaces but must not twist on icy patches so that the steel edges can maintain their grip on the snow along their entire length. This means that the ski never loses contact with the ground. The light weight of the carbon also plays a critical role for slalom skiing.

The first prototypes of the Audi Carbon Ski were tested on the slopes last month during the most famous downhill race in the world – the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel, and are being tested now at the World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The skis have also been extensively tested by specialists from premium sports equipment manufacturer Head and the German Ski Association to help perfect the design.

“As a long-time partner and sponsor of the German Ski Association, a ski produced by Audi is a logical consequence. This is how the Audi Carbon Ski concept came about. And the ski’s brilliant handling characteristics have been confirmed by professionals from the sport,” Egger said.
