  • Traffic Light Information is the first true Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) service by an automobile brand
  • The service starts up with variations on the Audi A4 and Q7 in Las Vegas
  • Networking is essential for autonomous driving in cities

Ingolstadt/Las Vegas, 7 December 2016 – If you know in advance when a traffic light will switch from red to green, your driving is more relaxed and efficient. Audi is the first car manufacturer to connect the car to the city infrastructure – an important step towards autonomous driving. In Las Vegas Audi A4 and Q7 models are now able to display traffic-light phases directly in the car. Further U.S. cities will follow, and introduction of the system is planned in Europe. Traffic Light Information optimises traffic flow, saves valuable time and reduces environmental impact.

Audi of America is cooperating with several cities in North America to upgrade the infrastructure for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technology. “For the first time, our cars are exchanging data with traffic infrastructure in real time. Drivers can adapt their behaviour to the situation and move through city traffic in a much more relaxed and controlled way,” says Andreas Reich, head of Electronics Pre-Development at AUDI AG. “We increase energy efficiency when we connect our Audi models to smart cities. Further V2I services will follow, making the car into an interactive mobile device. We see autonomous driving as the end of this development.”

As a first step, all Audi A4 and Q7 models produced for the U.S. market since June 2016 and equipped with Audi connect have this function on board. In the USA, municipal traffic management centres will communicate the traffic-light data to Audi’s project partner Traffic Technology Services TTS. Here the data are prepared and sent to the on-board computer in the Audi via a fast Internet connection, for example 4G/LTE, in real time.

Fuel savings of up to 15 per cent

The first function of the Traffic Light Information V2I component is called Time-to-Green. In the Audi virtual cockpit or head-up display, drivers see whether they will reach the next light on green while travelling within the permitted speed limit. If not, a countdown is provided of the time remaining until the next green phase – and drivers can throttle back in good time. Pilot projects in Europe have shown that drivers exercise more foresight thanks to this information about traffic lights. This has a beneficial overall effect on traffic flow. “In our tests the number of cars that had to brake to a standstill in traffic fell by around 20 percent. This saved time for the driver and also made fuel savings of about 15 percent in the pilot project,” says Michael Zweck, project manager for Audi Traffic Light Information.

First of all, Audi customers will use this service. The development work that Audi is investing in traffic-light systems will also benefit customers of other brands in future. The increasing spread of the technology will help city traffic planners to understand the causes of hold-ups and optimise the phasing of traffic lights.

In future Traffic Light Information could be linked up to smart navigation and used for new powering concepts. For example, “green waves” in traffic-light sequences could be incorporated in route planning. It is also conceivable that Audi e-tron models could make greater use of braking energy by charging the battery as they decelerate at a red light.

Audi also intends to introduce the technology in Europe. In Berlin, Ingolstadt, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Verona there have already been extensive pilot projects. In Berlin alone, some 700 traffic lights in the inner city have been connected to the service. Across Europe, however, unified data standards and digital infrastructure do not exist: “In Europe highly diverse traffic technology is in use, as the infrastructure has developed locally. We are working on harmonisation of the data that have been prepared. After that has been done, we can provide Traffic Light Information in Europe too,” Michael Zweck announced.

  • A3 range recently overhauled with latest technology updates and sharp new styling
  • A3 Cabriolet available in SE, Sport and S line specification
  • Five petrol and diesel engines, manual and S tronic and the option of quattro all-wheel drive
  • New S3 Cabriolet power boosted to 310PS and torque to 400Nm
  • Pricing ranges from £26,875 OTR for the 1.4 TFSI 150PS to £40,670 OTR for the S3 Cabriolet

Critical acclaim has frequently been heaped on the Audi A3 range since the first generation was introduced in 1996, and the latest recognition for the premium compact star has come in the form of a Best Cars trophy from trusted review website Carbuyer.co.uk, which has singled out the A3 Cabriolet as the Best Convertible for 2017.

Citing the reasons behind the win, Editor of Carbuyer Stuart Milne commented: "Convertibles are all about feeling the wind in your hair first and image second. No car fulfils these requirements better than the Audi A3 Cabriolet. It’s endlessly classy and desirable, plus it offers space for you and up to three passengers.

"The fabric roof can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 31mph, and once it’s stowed the boot is still useable. There’s lots of scope for personalisation, and like every other A3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. If you want technology to give your A3 Cabriolet a real edge, then the optional Virtual Cockpit replaces the standard dials with a TFT screen. Very smart indeed."

As the beneficiary of a comprehensive update programme applied to the full model range earlier this year, an enhanced specification list is chief among the improvements and now includes Audi smartphone interface, cruise control, light and rain sensors and xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights as standard on the entry-level SE. Sport models gain Audi drive select and MMI Navigation with a three-month free trial of the Audi connect suite, while the already richly appointed S line is fitted with LED headlights front and rear and dynamic ‘scrolling’ indicators for the rear lights. An LED interior lighting pack rounds off the new additions.

The pin-sharp Audi virtual cockpit can also be chosen along with a host of other technology from the larger Audi models, from the MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch, Audi Phone Box, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and the even more illuminating Matrix LED headlights.

A multitude of key driver aids can also dramatically improve the overall comfort and safety of each journey. Particular highlights from the assistance system portfolio include Traffic Jam Assist, which actively works with the adaptive cruise control system and can accelerate, brake and even steer the A3 Cabriolet at speeds of up to 37mph, active lane assist which can gently steer the car to keep it in lane above 40mph and emergency assist, which is capable of intervening and bringing the car to a gradual standstill if no response is detected from the driver.

Seven-seat Audi SUV reigns supreme in highly respected industry awards category

  • Audi Q7 in SE specification announced as the 2016 judges’ Luxury SUV choice
  • Available to order now with a 218PS or 272PS V6 TDI engine
  • quattro all-wheel drive fitted as standard on all Q7 variants
  • Comprehensive SE specification includes Audi parking system plus, pre-sense city, smartphone interface, Audi drive select, MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch, dual-zone electronic climate control and heated, electrically adjustable front seats
  • Further enhancements for S line include all-weather LED headlights and dynamic rear indicators, 20-inch alloys, privacy glass and bespoke detailing inside and out
  • Priced from £48,455 to £54,540 OTR

The eminently capable Audi Q7 and its blend of exemplary refinement, technological sophistication and comfort have earned it the seal of approval from the judges at Professional Driver magazine, who have crowned it this year’s Luxury SUV. The ringing endorsement was presented at the publication’s Car of the Year Awards, held last night in London.

Mark Bursa, editor of Professional Driver Magazine, said: “The new Q7 is a neater, lower car than the original version, and our judges were full of praise for its car-like ride and handling, and excellent driving dynamics. The sat-nav system drew praise too, allowing multiple map displays on nav screen and instrument panel.”

A panel comprising over 80 members representing multiple disciplines, from private hire firms and chauffeurs to experienced motoring journalists, singled out the entry-level SE specification as their preference, which features a host of technology that is ideally suited to the chauffeur car role. Making life easier for both driver and passengers is the raised ride height, Audi smartphone interface and MMI Navigation Plus with the MMI Touch handwriting facility for quick and intuitive navigation entries.

Other particularly suitable elements that single the Q7 out as an ideal candidate include the option of adaptive air suspension for a cosseting ride on every occasion, regardless of road condition, and various driver assistance systems that can take the strain out of travelling congestion and even save operators money in the long term. Two such examples are the adaptive cruise control with the integrated traffic jam assist function that can brake, accelerate and steer the car in traffic at up to 37mph, and the predictive efficiency assistant, which uses the route data not only to advise the driver of where they can lift off the accelerator, but is also capable of actively ‘freewheeling’ the transmission where possible to reduce consumption and enhance ride comfort.

For even greater levels of refinement, power door closure is available and the windscreen and front side windows can be upgraded with heat and sound insulating glass in addition to privacy glass which is already fitted as standard on S line models.

In terms of infotainment, the Audi entertainment mobile provides an immersive experience for rear-seat passengers through two detachable 10.1-inch touchscreens that are capable of streaming content from a range of source including iOS or Android and Bluetooth, while the Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system provides a rich cinematic audio experience that is on a par with a concert hall.

Extensive testing over a full day is undertaken by the Professional Driver panel and involves a circular road route, taking in urban roads and motorway-standard dual-carriageways. The cars are then given a full walk-around scrutiny and on-board systems are comprehensively trialled.

Naturally, boot space tests are an important part of the process and the Q7 comfortably excels with a 770-litre luggage capacity that increases to 1955 litres with the third row of seats folded.

A power-operated tailgate adds to the convenience, and the third row of seats can also be raised or lowered in seconds electrically via buttons in the boot or the second seat row.

Popular Black Edition specification casts its shadow over more Audi models including new A3 and S3, TT Coupe and Roadster and S6 and S7

  • Black Edition specification returns to the A3 and TT ranges and broadens its reach to Q3, S6 Saloon and Avant and S7 Sportback
  • A3 Black Edition prices from £26,565 OTR, S3 Black Edition from £33,880 OTR
  • Q3 Black Edition from £34,550 OTR
  • TT Black Edition from £31,735 OTR, TTS Black Edition from £41,285 OTR
  • S6 Black Edition from £59,440 OTR, S7 Sportback Black Edition from £66,780 OTR
  • Additional equipment highlights include black styling pack, privacy glass, piano black inlays and Audi, BOSE or Bang & Olufsen sound system upgrades depending on model

Audi design is even more becoming in black - this appears to be the opinion of an ever increasing number of UK customers choosing Black Edition versions of their preferred Audi model, prompting more widespread integration of the dark tinted specification option to include the latest A3 and S3, TT and TT Roadster, S6 and S7 Sportback models. Available from this month, these new variants join the first ever Black Edition version of the Q3 compact SUV, which has also just come on stream.

In the A3 three-door, five-door Sportback and Saloon ranges Black Edition specification is offered as a step up from the top S line trim. It brings special 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels with a matt titanium finish and darkened privacy glass extending from the B pillar rearwards, plus of course a distinctive black finish for the Single Frame grille surround, air inlets, window cappings and door mirrors. Inside, the ambiance is also enriched by a 10-speaker Audi Sound System with 180 watts of music power.

S3 three-door and Sportback Black Edition models combine the new colour-coding with 18-inch five-arm Turbine design wheels, while S3 Saloon Black Edition models upgrade to a 19-inch five-arm Wing design corresponding in size with the 19-inch wheel used by ‘standard’ S3 Saloon models. Internally all three variants also benefit from a Bang & Olufsen audio system in place of the Audi Sound System normally included as part of the S3 specification.

The Black Edition formula is applied in a similar concentration for TT and TTS Coupe and Roadster models, but in these versions 19-inch five-spoke Blade design alloy wheels and Bang & Olufsen audio form part of the package, as does an additional powered wind deflector for the Roadster.

The Q3 range adopts the Black Edition specification for the first time in its production lifespan as part of a package of upgrades which become applicable across the UK range from this month. Replacing the S line plus model, it builds on that version’s already extensive specification not only with its black styling package and 19-inch 10-Y-spoke design alloy wheels with their black diamond cut finish, but also with standard metallic paint, privacy glass and a BOSE sound system upgrade.

The particularly visually arresting S6 Saloon and Avant and S7 Sportback Black Edition models also derive their more brooding stance from similar styling revisions. S6 and S6 Avant Black Edition models combine these with 20-inch five twin spoke alloy wheels, while S7 Sportback Black Edition models move up to a 21-inch five-arm Rotor design. Inside, in addition to piano black inlays, both models gain a BOSE sound system and a flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel.
